Book Club News
February 23, 2011
Time for an update on our North Oak book clubs. The North Oak Branch hosts a book club on the third Wednesday of every month. This is led by Jennifer from our staff. Feel free to call or stop by for information. The North Oak Branch also offers support for our community book groups. Two years ago, I had three clubs using our branch as their resource for their club‘s books. Today our branch is helping fifteen groups on a regular or occasional basis.
I thought I would talk about some of the most requested books for last year. Many of these titles are showing up on this year’s requests also. The Help by Kathryn Stockett was read by six of our clubs last year, and is on the list of three more clubs this year. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson is making the rounds with more requests as the buzz around this first in a series of three books continues to grow. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein was enjoyed by many groups also. A personal favorite of mine is Moonflower Vine by Jetta Carlson. This is a book I probably wouldn’t have read if it had not been drawn to my attention by a book club member. I have recommended it to several of our clubs last year. Two groups are reading it now and several later in the year. My Sister’s Keeper seems to be the most often requested of Jodi Picoult’s novels. In my next blog, I’ll list more non-fiction requests and young adult choices that are being read by our North Oak customers. Call or email me if your club would like to use the North Oak Branch as your book club resource or would like suggestions for your upcoming meetings. You can reach me by calling the branch at 816-436-4385, ask for Linda, or lobrien@mymcpl.org.
