Book Club Meets During the Holiday Weekend
June 25, 2013
Yes, the Kearney Book Club will meet on the 5th of July. The branch is open and you’re welcome to take a break from all the fiery fourth festivities and chill with us. We’ll discuss The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin.
Part historical fiction and part romance, this richly atmospheric novel takes place just before the turn of the 19th century. We get a glimpse into the lives of the astoundingly rich in America - think Rockefeller and Carnegie, or Gates and Buffett today. It’s an era of privilege and extravagance where families at the top of the wealthiest class have only one option when seeking a match for their daughters that will move them even further up the social ladder. Rich girls must go to Europe to find titled husbands. Young Cora Cash (aptly named) journeys to England with her domineering mother to “buy” an English lord. The last thing she expects is to fall in love with one.
There’s a great companion book to this one that tells the true stories of a hundred real American heiresses. The book is called, To Marry an English Lord by Gail MacColl. Check it out, too!
Join us at the Kearney branch on Friday, July 5th at 10 a.m. for coffee, tea, and a good discussion.
