Book Club and a Bit About the Author
October 15, 2010
Riverside Book Club will not meet in November. Our next meeting is December 14 at 10:00 A.M. We will be reading South of Broad by Pat Conroy.
Pat Conroy (nee Donald Patrick Conroy) was born October 26, 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from The Citadel in 1967 with a B.A. in English. The Lords of Discipline (1980), which was nominated for the Robert Kennedy Book Award in 1981, was based on his experiences at The Citadel.
His teaching career includes teaching illiterate black children in a two-room schoolhouse on Daufuskie Island off the South Carolina coast. His experiences on Daufuskie Island formed the basis for his first successful novel The Water Is Wide (1972), which won Conroy the Anisfield-Wolf Award from the Cleveland Foundation, and was made into the movie Conrack starring Jon Voight in 1976. A few of his other novels include The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides and Beach Music.
If you haven't read any of Pat Conroy's works, you are missing some good reading. Come join us on December 14th at 10:00 A.M. as we discuss South of Broad.
