As the temperatures begin to dip, my thoughts turn to those who will be most affected by the oncoming winter. Across the nation, small and large cities are being forced to close their doors to the homeless because of the drastic change in our economy. State budgets have been cut severely since 2008, and already, many states have projected shortages for the fiscal year 2012, a sum of more than $86 billion, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. There are precious few places for the homeless to go during the day to escape snow, rain, or heat, but to rest their head for the night...many shelters are either packed to capacity or closed.
The Boardwalk Branch of MCPL is here to help. We have compiled a range of resources to put on display in our lobby: pamphlets, toll free numbers, maps, and other various information about places where people can get help right here in Platte and Clay counties. If you need a place to stay, some help paying your bills, or a warm coat for your kids, there’s information here to help you. Please stop by and pick up some information for yourself or for someone you know. We want to get the information out so that there will be NO ONE bearing the cold without help this winter.
