Bilbo Baggins Is My Mentor
January 06, 2014
I have discovered that sometimes the best mentor we could ask for comes to us from a rather unexpected time and place, and they lend us some of the most profound insights that only time helps us make sense of it. Sometimes, this place and time is the here and now. Other times, this person makes their entrance from a completely different avenue—a period that does not, did not, nor ever will exist. And yet they are just as real and influential as any friend or family member you know today.
Bilbo Baggins is my hero and mentor. I have been reminded that selflessness, courage, perseverance, and whit can take one very far from what is comfortable in life, but make for a truly great, inspiring story. No matter what we do, we all leave a story behind—from the choices we make and the actions we take to our hobbies and material possessions.
He has reminded me of my hope to leave a great story behind for others to learn from. So that’s the journey on which I’m embarking in 2014. Just like Bilbo, I need to go on an adventure, maybe don’t want to, but I need to. What the adventure will be, I’m not fully aware of. I’m looking to make each day an adventure, maybe not one of danger and daring acts every single day, but an adventure of doing something new, looking at the world from a new perspective, and finding adventure where I hadn't seen it before.
Tolkien said it best, “Not all who wander are lost.”
