A Big Step
June 04, 2013
I was working at the front desk this past Saturday when a family came in to get a library card for their son. Mom, Dad, and the boy all came to the desk with huge smiles because this would be his very first library card. He had been ready to do this for quite a while, and he was incredibly excited! All of us at the desk made a big deal about this new chapter in his life. Mom took lots of pictures to mark this big occasion. He got a sticker to let the whole world know that he'd gotten his library card that day. He held up his card with such pride; his face was glowing as his mom took that picture! Later, as I checked his books out to him, we talked about the Summer Reading Program and earning free books to keep at his house.
Reflecting on the day that evening, I recalled this family and their obvious pride in their son. It was a really cool thing to be a part of, and it was the highlight of my workday. It's great to work at the Library, and this boy's story is just one more example of how we are changing lives every day. I am looking forward to seeing him in the future as he continues to grow. I hope reading will become a habit that he keeps for a lifetime!
