Beyond the Books
October 25, 2012
Beyond the Books is the title for the quarterly brochure published to show the classes and programs offered at MCPL. You can find this at the front desk at your local MCPL branch. But get them quick, they go fast. While browsing the magazine, I saw a program listed at a branch other than where I work, and I signed up online. This program was a walking tour of the River Market area of Kansas City. We met at the Steamboat Arabia and walked with a guide through the River Market.
He explained about local buildings and people that were popular in their heyday. We walked to a wooden bridge that was constructed over the Missouri River. It was great place to get a view of the city and see what the community had done to improve the area of the market. This was an excellent program that I would highly recommend.
Another favorite I found in Beyond the Books is the program featuring Gerald Dickens, great-great grandson of Charles Dickens. He is a professional actor from England who portrays the voices of A Christmas Carol. This year he is at the Antioch and Lee's Summit branches.
The Raytown Branch is hosting Night Before Christmas Carol on Tues. November 27 at 2:00 p.m. Renowned Dickens scholar, author, playwright and lecturer, Elliot Engel has crafted a work that allows David zum Brunnen to portray the 17 Christmas Carol characters and Charles Dickens himself.
All branches of MCPL offer programs and classes through the year. Check them out online or in Beyond the Books.
