BASEBALL

Summer! What does summer bring with it? BASEBALL....."Take me out to the ball game, take me out with the crowd, buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks, I don't care if I never get back, let me root, root, root, for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame, for it's one, two, three strikes, you’re out at the old ball game". Peanuts... Hot dogs... Popcorn... Pretzels... Coke...etc. Hooray to the white and blue! It's always fun to be able to go to a game at Kaufman Stadium.
In the 1970's and 80's, going to the games was great. We knew all of the player’s names, and maybe had favorite ones, at least I did. I had a favorite, and he was Freddie Patek (the shortstop). There was Hal McRae, Frank White, Willie Wilson, Amos Otis, John Wathan, Brett Saberhagen, and Dan Quisenberry (who was one of our pitchers). Paul Splittorff was also on our team; he just recently died of cancer.. Sad to think about. Then who could forget our own George Brett? He was with the Royals longer than anyone.
In 1985, the Royals won the World Series. That was exciting. Everyone was glued to their TV’s watching our Royals play the Saint Louis Cardinals. The players change more often now than they used to. Baseball can be fun no matter who is playing. Even watching a little league team play is exciting to me.
Mid-Continent Public Library has books on baseball and other sports too. We have Crowning the Kansas City Royals: Remembering the 1985 World Series Champs by Jeffrey Spivak or Denny Matthews's Tales from the Royals Dugout by Denny Matthews.
Check out our catalog for other books on the Royals or just sports period. Just remember, three strikes and you’re out... Or, hit a home run at any one of our branches.
