Attention Parents: Your Children Will Be Grown Before You Know It!
July 20, 2013
I have heard many parents, including myself, say that their children grew up so fast. Time just seems to get away, and before we know it, they are on their own, or they are getting ready to be. My son will be a high school senior this year, and time has flown by. The time we have with them is so short compared to their life spans.
In this day and time, children are raising themselves on technology. Adults are even spending an alarming amount of time plugged-in. I say, take your family back! Have a media fast. This means turn off the computer and TV for a week and spend time together. Everyone will probably hate the idea at first, but they will start to enjoy themselves as the week progresses. Create some fun memories and traditions that they will remember and pass on to their families. The kids will still want to do this when the week is over.
In a recent poll, children were asked, what was the one thing they would like from their parents. What they wanted their parents to know was that they wanted their time! Just to spend time with them.
Summertime is a great time to connect with your kids. Kids love when the adults in their lives want to spend time with them and just be silly. Here are some ideas that might help you get started.
- Camping in the backyard.
- Read books together under a shade tree.
- Make sidewalk chalk and decorate the driveway.
- Hang a large white sheet on the side of your home or garage and watch a movie outside.
- Catch lightning bugs.
- Play hide-and-seek in the dark.
- Board game night
- Go swimming.
- Go fishing.
- Go to the zoo.
There are also many books at the Library that can help you with fun ideas to do this summer; Family Fun Night by Cynthia L. Copeland, Just Family Nights by Susan Vogt, and 365 Unplugged Famly Fun Activities by Steven Bennett. If you would like more choices, just type in "family recreation" and search by subject for other ideas.
Our children are our future, so let’s invest in them. I promise, you will also have a lot of fun, and you will have memories to cherish, too. If you make time for them now, they will make time for you in their future. Feel free to add your ideas or memories.
