Art in North Carolina
May 18, 2011
Last month, I went to visit my son and his family in Raleigh, NC. I had a wonderful time catching up on all the new accomplishments of my two North Carolina grandchildren, a girl aged 7 and a boy aged 2. My granddaughter couldn’t wait to show me the art museum in Raleigh. Her class had taken a field trip to the museum, and she learned a lot about the sculptures displayed there.
The museum turned out to be the highlight of my trip. It is wonderfully open, airy and bright. Each piece of art is given plenty of space and light. Sofia gave her parents and me a very insightful tour of the sculptures that her class had seen. However, the best was yet to come.
As we browsed among the great paintings, I got to see my son showing his daughter a painting by his favorite artist, Canaletto. It brought to mind the fact that we really can pass on to our children an appreciation of the arts. How will they ever know what we value unless we show them? It was indeed a tender moment and one that I felt privileged to witness.
