America's Favorite Pastime

June 28, 2012

You are sitting in a room shrouded by darkness and shadows. Faces from times past keep popping up and fading away. In each face, you see a part of yourself, a missing puzzle piece. Then, suddenly, you see your grandmother's face smiling at you, then your mom's face, and your uncle's face. They're all waiting for you to ask them a question. What question do you suppose you would ask? Maybe, your grandfather told you that your great-great-great uncle Roxton fought in the Civil War, but you don't have proof...where do you look for that? And wouldn't you know it, Aunt Agnes doesn't remember her mom's birthday, and you need it for a school project...now what? To find out who you are, you need to ask those faces who they are.

The exciting realization is that you are not alone! Genealogy has become one of America's favorite pastimes, which is why the Midwest Genealogy Center offers an array of classes to get you started. The Beginning Genealogy class walks you through the steps to begin your research and what resources are available to you inside and outside the library. Or, you could go on the How to Use the Midwest Genealogy Center tour, which explains more in depth the resources available to you online and our microfilm and microfiche collections. We also have many "how-to" books available for checkout and knowledgable willing staff to get you jumpstarted in the right direction. Whether you're just beginning or an avid researcher, we have something for you. To see what classes fit your needs and to register online, go to our Events Page.

Access to your story, your history begins at the Midwest Genealogy Center and ends with your legacy.
