America the Beautiful
June 25, 2012
With the 4th of July holiday coming up, a fun and informative Online Resource to visit on the MCPL website can be found under Geography and Travel. America the Beautiful offers an unlimited source of information on every state and territory in our great nation.
The history, geography, culture, and more for each state can be found on this resource. Find out what famous Americans came from each state. The "Fast Facts" section has all kinds of interesting facts for each state. For example, did you know the origin of the name Missouri came from an American Indian phrase for "place of the big canoes," or that our state fish (I’ve lived here all my life and didn’t even know we had one!) is the channel catfish, and the state insect is the honeybee?
America the Beautiful offers levels suited for all ages to explore, from elementary through high school to educators. It’s a great way to learn more about the USA without spending a fortune on gas!
