The Amazing Colors and Beautiful Backdrops of Afghanistan
August 19, 2010
Much has been said recently, about what people do and don't know regarding Afghanistan. Most of what I know about Afghanistan is the everyday knowledge the typical American knows. I know Afghanistan is the home of several different people groups, each with a proud history, trying to live together under challenging circumstances. If you are like me and are interested in learning more about this country so many people are fighting for, you may want to check out some of the books featured in the Grandview Branch's Diversity display this month. Our wide variety on display is sure to answer some of your questions about this complicated land so far away, but on so many minds.

A great book about Afghanistan
A really great book about Afghanistan is "An Unexpected Light: Travels in Afghanistan" by Jason Elliot. The author decided his life was boring, so he went to Afghanistan during the Soviet Invasion period and lived with the Mujaheddin fighters. The Afghan people are known fierce fighters but I was surprised by the hospitality shown to the author, even during the darkest days of the war when few people had enough for themselves, let alone a Western wanderer.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
