Aliens and Astronauts at the Grandview Branch
June 01, 2012
Tuesday, May 29th was the kickoff party for Summer Reading Program here at the Grandview Branch. The Summer Reading Program theme this year is "Dream Big...Read" and our branch theme is "Reach for the Stars." On Tuesday, the stars came to us: over 500 people attended the kickoff party!

To kick things off, we sang Dino O'Dell's song "Zar," which told how a flying saucer came to be in the Library. All the aliens and astronauts came up front to help the shipwrecked alien Zar get his flying saucer back in working order.

Zar crashes his flying saucer at the Library.

Zar asks for help in UFO repairs.

After the ship was repaired, Zar was kind enough to let us use it as a sign-up booth. THANKS, ZAR!
The SRP coloring contest drew over 80 entries, and the winners of the various age groups (2 and under, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9 and up) received fabulous prizes for their creativity and artistic talent. Meanwhile, there were lots of fun activities like making a rocket, face-painting, and temporary tattoos.

Finally, professional children's storyteller (and Grandview Branch favorite) Jo Ho got us ready to Dream Big with "PJs and Plushables."

Make sure to visit the Summer Reading Program page to get your children signed up so they can earn books and incentives. Don't forget about the Teen Summer Reading Program either! Teens can earn Library Bucks that they can use to get books, pay fines, buy items or pay for prints and copies just for reading books and writing reviews.
