Heist Society by Ally Carter

Kat hasn't exactly had what you might call a "normal upbringing" -- being raised by the best art thief alive. That's why she's decided to give up the family business for a taste of normal adolescence. Her best scam yet lands her in an elite boarding school...for a blissful three months.

SOPA/PIPA, or Why You Can't Access Wikipedia Today

You might have noticed that Wikipedia and many other websites are unavailable today as a protest against pending legislation in Congress known as SOPA/PIPA (Stop Online Piracy Act, H.R. 3261, Protect IP Act, S. 968). Many other websites are putting their opposition to SOPA/PIPA at the top of their pages. What is going on here? Briefly put, many creators and owners of intellectual property support these bills as a way to fight online piracy, while critics maintain that these bills would effectively cripple the free flow of information on the Internet.

Immortal Combat

Recently, I had a conversation with a three-year-old friend of mine about who would win in a fight: Darth Vader or Buzz Lightyear. The three-year-old enthusiastically supported Darth Vader, and I have to say that I agree. I then asked him who would win if the fight was Darth Vader vs. Batman. Again, he said Darth Vader. And on the conversation went with Darth Vader defeating every superhero or villain I could throw at him.

All in all, it was an incredibly cool conversation.

Top 5 New Year's Resolutions

So I know that the New Year started 10 days ago, but, well, I'm sort of a procrastinator. Plus, it takes a while to come up with really good resolutions. Resolutions I might actually be able to keep. Think about it. How many times have you resolved to be nicer to your brother? Or to get better grades? Or to stop drinking pop? Or to save up your money for something that actually matters? Or to get a girlfriend? Or to clean up your room before your mom yells at you to do it? Yeah, we've all been there.

14th Annual Librarians Read Challenge

The New Year not only marks the chance to start over again, but it also gives librarians a chance to try new reading material that they may have overlooked from the past year. From the 1st of January to the 1st of March, the 14th annual Librarians Read Challenge takes place at MCPL. It’s a challenge for librarians to read juvenile and young adult material.

2011: The Year that a Flying Pop-Tart Rainbow Cat Conquered the World

According to the Vietnamese Zodiac, 2011 is the year of the Cat. I'm not much of a believer in astrological forces influencing the course of human events. But this year, the Vietnamese Zodiac was stunningly accurate. The year 2011 will go down in history as the year that the world was conquered by a cat with a Pop-Tart body flying through outer space leaving a rainbow in its wake, all set to the tune of an annoyingly catchy voice-synthesized ditty.

MASL Announces the 2012-2013 Award Nominees!

It's time! It's awards season, folks. We librarians get pretty psyched about this time of year, trying to decide which books may win big! If you are yawning already, I promise to make it worth your while with two words: Truman and Gateway. That's right, the 2012-2013 nominees have been announced!

New Year's Reading Resolutions

I know it’s hard to believe, but 2011 is just about over. Maybe it’s just because I’m a boring ol’ grownup, but this year seems to have flown (flown, I tell you!). And now, I’m starting that most important of librarian-y end-of-year traditions: deciding my reading list for the new year.

Of course, I don’t map out my entire reading list a year in advance, but I do have a handful of books I intended to read (but never did) in 2011. So far on my "to read" list are these ten titles:

60 Seconds...One Challenge...Don't Blow It.

Ever heard of Minute to Win it? Or Stupid Human Tricks? This is the library version for teens. Come to the library and challenge your coordination. Plan on catching, tossing, shooting rubber bands, and playing keep it up with balloons. Winners will be rewarded, and everyone will be photographed (including myself). On December 6th at 7:00 p.m., be there and bring you’re A game.
