It’s an exciting time to be part of the MCPL community. As you may already know, your library received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service last week in Washington D.C. at a ceremony at the White House. Next week, the Colbern Road Branch will be receiving a local honor: the Lee’s Summit Reading Council Literacy Award.
The Reading Council will host a reception at the branch on May 20, starting at 5:00 p.m. This event is open to the public, and everyone is welcome to attend.
I can't believe that I just landed in Washington, D.C.!
After picking up my luggage, I had to figure out the D.C. Metro system. I was worried about how to find my way around, but then I realized the Metro is a series of underground tunnels. And a worm knows how to navigate underground tunnels!
My first stop was to Arlington and the Iwo Jima Memorial to pay respect to our nation's finest heroes.
It may seem that children are getting online profiles too young these days. Most are getting smart phones sooner than starting high school, but is the idea of being online all bad? How important is it going to be for their careers in a world run by the Internet? I recently read somewhere how important it is for younger people to start creating a “digital footprint” that will follow them in a positive manner all through their professional lives.
A Bookworm's Journey: How a Library is Like an Ice Cream Cake
I did it!! I made it to all 30 Mid Continent Public Library Branches + one Library-To-Go location!
I also stopped by the Midwest Genealogy Center to read more about my family heritage. Of course MCPL had a book on the Lowly family tree! They even have a fun "Famous Missourians" card series to collect!
Mid-Continent has always known that we are really good at getting kids to read over the summer. The DESE study from a few years back told us that kids who read over the summer do not experience the summer slide. For many years, we used that information to help gain school cooperation by allowing us to visit their schools and encourage students to read over the summer.
I am sure many of you have already heard, but MCPL has incredible news that I wanted to share with you. We have been awarded the Institute of Museum and Library Service National Medal for 2014! This is an unbelievable honor and a testament to all the hard work and great service performed by your library and the team of dedicated library professionals, both past and present.
I don’t know about you, but I sure am! My husband keeps reminding me, “You’re not a spring chicken anymore!” This, after I fell roller skating with my nephew. Why? Why can’t I still be a spring chicken? I still FEEL like one! After a heavy sigh, I have to admit, I am NOT a spring chicken. How depressing.
Do you have dreams of starting your own business but don’t know where to go to get accurate, professional information? Maybe, you’ve already taken those first steps into small business ownership, but now you’ve hit a wall. Perhaps, you’ve even looked into MCPL’s awesome Online Business Resources, but you’d really like learn from an instructor. Mid-Continent Public Library is now offering free small business classes at several of our branch locations.
