The weather is starting to heat up and the remaing days of school are dwindling down, but these aren't the only signs that summer is approaching fast. The changing of the seasons is also marked by the beginning of the annual Summer Reading Program!
Mid-Continent Public Library is taking part in an exciting new reading program through OverDrive called "Big Library Read," and we hope you'll consider participating!
I recently participated in the 2013 National Library Legislative Day. This event is sponsored by the American Library Association and occurs in the spring every year. The Missouri delegation was comprised of three public librarians, two academic librarians, and one school librarian, coming from all parts of the Show-Me State.

One of my best memories from last year is traveling to Chicago to attend the RT Booklovers Convention. After five days of book signings, authors’ workshops, fantastic all-day parties, and a TON of swag, I couldn’t wait to get home and tell everyone about the fabulous time I had. Authors are our Rock Stars after all, so meeting so many of them in person was the ultimate thrill! One of my co-attendees, Beth Atwater, called the convention "one giant slumber party with 1,000 of your best friends." What could be better than that?
The 2013 Truman Heritage Festival Barbecue Championship
When I lived out of state, people who knew I was from the Kansas City area would ask my opinion of the local barbecue restaurants. I was evidently considered an expert on barbecue simply by growing up here in the KC area. Believe it or not, one can find good barbecue in places like Half Moon Bay, California, and Pocatello, Idaho.
IndieFlix is one of MCPL’s newest databases where you can stream independent films and shorts for free! You can find a wide variety of videos, and they have a great filtering system to help you find exactly what you are looking for. You do have to create a free account with IndieFlix, and when you log in, you see a warning that the films are not rated "and may contain offensive language, scenes of violence and sexual situations" (parents will need to be responsible to monitor their kids’ usage).
It's almost here! Preparations are underway for the opening of the new Woodneath Library Center located north of the river at 8900 N. Flintlock Road. We are happy to announce that the grand opening will be on Saturday, June 22. We hope you can join us to celebrate this new Northland jewel. More details will be on the way soon!
Suffering from Downton Abbey Withdrawal? Check Out the Library
It's been a few weeks since the curtain closed on those lovable, albeit slightly snooty, Crawleys and their little house in the country, Downton Abbey. In Downton Abbey's third season, life was a roller coaster for our plucky little group of aristocrats and their livery - some were born, some died, and still others couldn't catch a husband with a fishing net.
