2011 Award Winners for Young Adults

Yesterday was a big day in Young Adult literature, as many of the 2011 Awards were announced! There are several awards given to books geared toward teens.

The Alex Awards are given to adult books that appeal to teens. Ten titles are chosen every year.
2011 Winners

The Margaret A. Edwards Award is given to an author for significantly contributing to the YA Genre as a whole.
2011 Winner: Terry Prachett, 2011 Winner Overview.

The William C. Morris Award is given to the best new novelist for teens.
2011 Winner: Blyth Woolston for The Freak Observer, 2011 List of Winners.

The John A. Newbery Award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
2011 Winner: Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool (a Missouri resident!), 2011 List of Winners.

The YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award is given for (obviously) fantastic nonfiction aimed at teens.
2011 Winner: Janis Joplin: Rise Up Singing by Ann Angel, 2011 List of Winners.

The Odyssey Award is given for the best audiobook.
2011 Winner: The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, narrated by Bahni Turpin, 2011 List of Winners.

The Michael L. Prinz Award is given for excellence in teen literature.
2011 Winner: Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi, 2011 List of Winners.

The Coretta Scott King Award is given to books and authors who promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.
2011 Winners

The Stonewall Award is given for books celebrating the LGBTQ experience geared toward children and young adults.
2011 Winner: Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher, 2011 List of Winners.

The Schneider Award is given for books that embody artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.
2011 Winners: After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick, and Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John, 2011 List of Winners.
