In exploring the many databases offered in MCPL’s Online Resources, I found one that’s very useful and fun under Biography called Biography in Context.
Having entered semi-retirement recently, I’ve been spending some of my spare time working for Mid-Continent Public Library. Being surrounded by books on a regular basis has given me the opportunity reread books I enjoyed as a child. One of the books of that I have fond memories is titled Jexium Island by the French author Madeleine Grattan. I checked MCPL's catalog to see if any of the thirty MCPL branches had a copy of the book. Unfortunately, this book was published back in 1957, and none of them had a copy.
While many of you might be familiar with our Research Databases that we have available to you absolutely free, did you know that you can get many of them as an app for your iPad, iPhone, or Android device?
Have you ever needed an article from a reference book only to find that MCPL’s single non-circulating copy is at the branch that is furthest from your home? Did you know there’s an alternative to driving all that way?
What do you want to be when you grow up? Children hear this question so often, they have the answer memorized. But how accurately does this memory reflect their true calling? My youngest daughter, applying for colleges, declared that she wanted to heal people. However, getting a degree in nutritional science, she complained that I had steered her away from her true calling in a writing career by referring to her as "my little nurse" her entire life. Who would have thought that a term of endearment could become a dooming label?
Students always need more resources for reports or projects, and among our databases is Access Video on Demand. Access Video has a multitude of documentaries, educational films, and instructional videos covering business, career planning, health, history, travel, and other subjects.
My husband downloaded Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator on my computer for me to use to work on family photos that I plan on scanning and to help me with my card designs.
Growing up, having venison for dinner never occurred in my household. Common meals in my house were beef, chicken, and fish, so that is what I learned to cook. So it has been quite an experience for me being married to a hunter and having a freezer full of venison meat. I didn't know where to start. I didn't have any recipes for venison, and I knew I couldn't call and ask my mother for advice on preparing it since she's never cooked with it either.
Spring is coming! Term papers and end of semester theses will be due before you know it, but don’t panic. The Library can get you started on all that research looming ahead.
