It's Eurovision week, and that means lots of good, crazy, and downright odd music out of Europe.
What's Eurovision, you ask? Imagine that for American Idol they entered one song per US state. Eurovision is a similar competition except in Europe. Singers are entered from various countries in Europe all competing to not only win, but to host the contest the next year.
I was very glad to see someone else write about the Eurovision Song Contest. Thank you Jennie V!
Today is the second semi-final. Who would I vote for you ask? I would vote for the best singer, no matter where the singer is from. Although, it was very pleasant to see Dima Bilan bringing Eurovision to Moscow in 2009.
Ever hear of a rock and roll band called Big Star? They were a band from Memphis that achieved great critical but not commercial success in the early 1970’s. The lead singer for Big Star was Alex Chilton, who had previously fronted The Box Tops during the mid to late 60’s. Chilton and The Box Tops had a number one hit, The Letter, when Chilton was only sixteen years old. Other hits by the Box Tops and Alex Chilton dur
Have a Musical Time With the Chambers Family Band!
Take a break from the summer weather with the sounds of live music. A family band of multi-talented musicians will be at the Excelsior Springs Branch to perform a variety of tunes, ranging from classical to bluegrass. The band consists of five children (ranging in age from 10 to 21, plus mom). The fact that they are performing in our nice air-conditioned library is a bonus. Don't miss out on this musical treat that will also give you a look at types of music that kids can perform at an early age.
Music Under Consideration: It's Like American Idol At the Library
One of the many reasons why I really enjoy working at a library is that I keep up on music just by watching what CDs come across the counter. Since a lot of my favorite music doesn’t get much radio airplay, I use the library as my primary source for music. A lot of people come in and browse the CD collection, or go online to the MCPL catalog to search for new music. But, did you know that you can place holds on music CDs before they even hit the library shelves, and that by doing so, you can have a say in determining the content of MCPL’s music collection?
Undeniably, we're all connected in one way or another, but what actually connects us is the truly unique part of life. For some people, the job we hold connects us. For others, it's the way we live our lives. Then, there's music.
Sure, we have books and even movies at the library. But did you know that we also have a large music collection? MCPL has an extensive music collection on CD. Just search the catalog for your favorite performer (use the musician or group's name as the "author" in our catalog, and you're set!), or you can use a musical genre as subject.
As National Novel Writing Month approaches, now is the time to select the soundtrack for your novel. By now, you might be zeroing in on what type of story you want to write—a romance, an adventure, an adventurous romance—and you’ll want to find some music to listen to while you write.
