Dr. Ron Miriani, retired Professor of History, conducted a walking tour called Westport: The Town That Re-Invents Itself on October 9. The group met at Kelly’s Westport Inn, a designated national historical landmark, and stopped at over 30 locations, including Harris Hotel and Pioneer Park.
Patrons explored the little known history of Kansas City’s oldest establishment, Westport. The adventure culminated with a tour of the Harris-Kearney House given by the Westport Historical Society.
Come join the Mid-Continent Public Library as we honor our veterans. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23rd, the Platte City Branch will host patriotic music, military vehicles, exhibits from local veterans and their organizations, as well as Q & A sessions with veterans and currently serving military officers. The Salute will end at 4:00 p.m.
Every ludicrous journey deserves a good send-off. Like spending 30 days writing a 50,000-word novel; that definitely counts. This year the Kansas City metro will be hosting two--that's right--two kick-off parties to inaugurate National Novel Writing Month 2010. The first is on October 23rd at 2 p.m. at the Johnson County Central Resource Library.
Who says librarians can't have a good time! We are some of the zaniest people around. Just watch us in our element when we gather together in a parade. I'm talking about the Gladfest Parade that was on Saturday, October 2.
We made people smile, handed out candy, strutted our stuff, and had a good time. If you missed us this year, be sure to catch us next year.
Belated congratulations to the MCPL Book Cart Drill Team and Independence Branches for winning First Place in the "Commercial-Other" Division at the Independence Halloween Parade. The Independence Halloween Parade is a rite of passage for many students in the area. Every student that has ever played in an Independence School band can tell you their own thrilling or chilling story of marching in the parade. It may be another parade to some, but for others, it's a tradition. The team did a great job, thanks for representing!
Come join the Blue Springs North Bookies as they meet at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore to judge the First Annual Sunnyvale "BookWalk" Contest. What fun we’ll have as we are entertained by the Sunnyvale Middle School Book Club. Participants will select a literary hero or heroine, dress in character, and entertain us--leaving everyone begging for more Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Be there or be square.
Some of my favorite conversations are with customers checking out wedding planning books; budgets, invitations, themes, decorations, flowers, receptions sites, the list could go on and on. MCPL is a great source for books for all your wedding planning needs.
It’s almost time for my favorite show of the year, The Auto Show at Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City. For anyone who enjoys seeing all the new cars & trucks, this is a don’t miss event. It runs from March 2nd – March 6th, 2011. Several of the brands I really like have made substantial upgrades to their models this year, and I’m anxious to see the changes.
When have you ever been able to take your family out to eat for only $10.00? I would probably have to say never! Well, if you live north of Platte City, here is your chance to fill up the bottomless pits in your family.
