If you don’t tell your kids they are learning something, they will just think they are having fun. MCPL has expanded their collection of online learning games for kids of all ages. Whoever made up the saying, cheaters never prosper," obviously never played Monopoly. Our family was playing the game and as a competitive ten-year-old, I wanted to win at all cost. The game box was dilapidated and held together with tape. The game rules were long lost, and so I spouted off some non-existent rule I made up which let me win the game.
Good thing for me we didn’t have the MCPL website to look up the rules for Monopoly; I would have been exposed as the fraud that I was.
What comes to mind when you think of the board game, checkers? This ancient game can easily be played by young and old. It can be a fun time to share with family and friends, or it can be part of a competitive tournament. Or, if you’re competitive yourself, it can be a competition in the family.
The game SCRABBLE has been around since 1948, and it’s come a long way from being a simple board game. Not only can free online versions be found on the web, but iPads and iPhones make it possible to play a game anytime, anywhere.
Towards the tail end of winter, I—like many people—begin to catch a little bit of the old cabin fever. But what can I do when I’ve exhausted my DVD collection and I’m just too antsy to sit and read? Especially when you’re watching your budget, it can be hard to find good entertainment that doesn’t break the bank. It’s often around the cold, dark days of January when I fall back on one of my favorite hobbies: roleplaying games.
Blue Springs South Teens Create Some Practical Works of Art
Last Saturday, we had a teen program at Blue Springs South. We made hair barrettes out of silk flowers that we had lying around the house. After a good rinse to remove dust and dry time in the sun, we were ready to reduce, recycle, and reuse!!!
We cut circles out of old felt and used hot glue to create our masterpieces. We took apart the silk flowers so they were just one layer of petals. That way, we could mix and match to create to our hearts content. We added "jewels" to the middle, metal barrettes to the back, and Voila!!! Magnifico!!!
If Jessica is a "Brit Lit" junkie, I will confess to being a Words With Friends junkie. I loved playing Scrabble years ago, so when a friend on Facebook invited me to play Words With Friends, I jumped right in—having no idea that I was about to get obsessed with a new toy.
Teen Game Night at the Grain Valley Branch was a huge success. A great group of teens came out to play board games, eat snacks, and just hang out with each other. The success of this program was thanks in part to the wonderful teachers at the Grain Valley North Middle School, who helped promote the program to their classes.
We're looking forward to hosting another game night soon.
