Goin' to Kansas City...

Legendary Jazz Musician, Fats Domino once wrote that he was ‘Going to Kansas City – Kansas City here I come!’  Whether you know the song or not, you probably know that Jazz is as important to Kansas City as Jack Stack Barbeque and the Christmas Lights on the Plaza every year.  With summer half gone, Independence Day past, and back-to-school time just starting to appear on the horizon, you may be wondering what there is to do around town – or if there’s something you’ve never done before.

Ahhh...Autumn!

The crisp mornings and evenings of late summer signal the transition to autumn. This year's autumnal equinox, according to USA.gov, officially arrives at 11:09 p.m. ET, September 22. That's probably politically incorrect of me given the excitement the World Cup generated this year.

Liberty Parade!

The Liberty Branch, including 15 staff and library friends, participated in the Liberty Fall Festival Parade on September 25, 2010. Staff shared candy and library bookmarks with parade watchers. We enjoyed seeing our local community attend the parade, and recognized many who regularly visit the library. It’s always a pleasure to see our library friends!

Gatsby Days in Excelsior Springs!

What is Gatsby Days you ask?
That was my question not that long ago, being a newcomer to the Excelsior area. Turns out, it's not a F. Scott Fitzgerald fiction festival, much to my own initial confusion and embarrassment. It's actually a celebration of Excelsior Springs's Prohibition Era history as a resort destination (Which even as a librarian I have to admit is far more fun...)

Where can you find the largest annual arts and crafts festival in Missouri? Here in Independence, Missouri of course!

Spanning Labor Day Weekend is the Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival, which is named after the three trails that originated here: Santa Fe, California and Oregon. It's free to get in, and there's lots of fun for everyone! Three main stages provide entertainment, and there's a midway full of carnival revelry. Add that to the over 500 booths with crafts and food and you've got yourself a great weekend.
