We are proud to have several local fiber artists setting up their spinning wheels, looms, flax spinning tools, fiber, raw fleece, and finished products at the Fiber Artists Showcase on May 5 in the Smithville Branch. Several knitters and spinners will also join us to knit, spin, crochet, and learn different methods to add to their toolbox and raise their skill levels. We have teen guilds, grandmother/granddaughter teams of knitters, and folks who raise their own sheep, alpacas, and angora goats.
Exotic animals as household pets can be dangerous. Most of you are probably thinking that is a pretty obvious statement. But exotic animal ownership, especially big cats, is a large problem. Laws regarding ownership of exotic animals vary from state to state.
Thanks to all the families who came to see the horses at the Blue Springs North Branch on Saturday, May 5, 2012 for the Horse Hooves in the Grass program! Kansas City’s Sunset Trails Stables brought two Quarter horses that the kids got to groom and pet! The children also learned about basic horse care, horse safety, and listened to a horse story.
Are you stuck at home this summer? Wouldn’t it be great if you could visit another country and learn about its people and culture? Well, this Thursday you can tour the world without ever leaving the Library!
For our last Homeschoolers @ the Librarymeeting before summer break, we’ll create art based on the traditions of several cultures and do some learning in the process. Students will be able to visit individual stations throughout the program to participate in a hands-on craft from various parts of the world.
Summer is right around the corner, and we've dreamed up some really fun (and free) events for children of all ages. Whether you're a child, a child at heart, or just like listening to stories and having fun, our following summer lineup will keep you entertained and happy all summer long!
Hey kids! Do you like comics? If so, then join our resident comic nerd...I mean expert...Mike at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, June 2 for Comic Books: Then or Now?. We'll talk about vitally important things like DC or Marvel, which superhero has the best movies, favorite writers and artists, and whatever else you want to talk about. It should be a pretty good time.
Join us on Thursday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. for the program Pet Suitcase. Pet Suitcase teaches compassion while helping children learn how to care for a pet. Children will take turns pulling items from a "pet’s suitcase" and identifying them. One of the program’s teachers will be a friendly certified companion animal. We really want to see you, so come to the library!
