World Diabetes Day was first celebrated on November 14, 2007, and is observed annually. While the campaign lasts the whole year, November 14th has been designated as World Diabetes Day. November 14th has been chosen to commemorate the birthday of Frederick Bantings who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients. The aim of WDD is to increase awareness of the effects of diabetes, its prevention and complications, and the care that the people with the condition need.
Diabetes Awareness month is November, and World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14th. Millions of people worldwide are involved in diabetes advocacy and awareness. The focus theme for 2009-2013 is Diabetes Education and Prevention.
