What comes to mind when you think of the board game, checkers? This ancient game can easily be played by young and old. It can be a fun time to share with family and friends, or it can be part of a competitive tournament. Or, if you’re competitive yourself, it can be a competition in the family.

Starting on October 11th at 7 p.m., we are having a 4 week program Learn to Play Chess. Nationally rated chess coaches Frank Whitsell and Ken Fee from the Kansas City Chess Club will be here to teach us how to play. Not only is it an incredibly fun board game, research says chess improves test scores on math and reading!
The game SCRABBLE has been around since 1948, and it’s come a long way from being a simple board game. Not only can free online versions be found on the web, but iPads and iPhones make it possible to play a game anytime, anywhere.

These are all good reasons for you to check out our board game night at the Excelsior Springs Branch. Join us as we play some classic board games, selected by teens like you, for about three hours. Enjoy free food and drinks, as well as a chance to win some prizes.

Looking through some of the books and game boards displayed on one of our branch displays this month reminded me of fun times playing Monopoly with my dad and friends when I was a young tween/teen. I was a "twentieth anniversary/surprise baby," born to parents who were in their late 30s and early 40s and had already raised three daughters, two of whom were married and the last a senior in high school. Since my dad was retired, he had time on Saturdays to play games with me and my friends. We would get the Monopoly game set up on the living room floor, get snack
