May 8th marks the 128th anniversary of the day Harry S Truman was born. Harry was born in Lamar, Missouri and moved to Independence in 1890.
He joined the Missouri National Guard in 1905, which eventually turned into the 2nd Missouri Field Artillery in 1917. While at Camp Doniphan near Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was made regimental canteen officer. This is where he learned the retail business.
In 1918, Harry was sent to France to fight in World War I. He was discharged on May 6, 1919 as a captain. In June of that same year, Harry married Bess.
