Have you lost the holiday spirit? Have you forgotten what a child feels like during the holidays? If you’re in need of a good reminder of what the holidays are all about, why don't you order one or two of the many great holiday movies the library has to offer. They will help remind you of how good it can feel to get into the spirit of the holiday season. Sometimes in the busy lives we all lead, we need a little reminder of how good it can make us feel when we are able to do something nice for someone else, and what better time of the year than the holi
As Christmas approaches, we all find ourselves thinking about Christmas past. Some of our favorite memories are always close in our hearts. I asked my co-workers about their favorite childhood gift memories and /or a favorite Christmas memories.
As we drive around our neighborhoods during this time of year, we see beautiful lights adorning trees and houses in and around the city. Christmas is a holiday to celebrate with lights. Lights on the trees, displayed on our homes, and hung from the Christmas tree, which we so lovingly put in our houses to adorn with presents. But did you know that Christmas is not the only significant holiday that is celebrated this time of year with lights?
I LOVE LIBERTY! Besides it being one of the best places to live and raise children, (in my ever so humble opinion) the historic downtown Liberty square is a "must see" this time of year. If you haven’t made time to visit, you are truly missing out on a special experience! The store fronts are filled with beautiful holiday displays, and inside you can purchase all types of unique gifts from food to fashion and flowers.
If you are a frequent or long-time patron of the Liberty Branch, you may be familiar with our larger than life Grinch. Each year, we pull out our favorite six-foot-tall handmade and hand-painted wooden library decoration. Then, we prop him up behind the circulation desk for all to see and enjoy during the holiday season.
Does anything have a worse reputation during the holiday season than fruitcake? So now that Christmas is over, what do you do with that dried-up brick made with those candied fruits? I say throw it away, and start perfecting a fruitcake made from fresh or dried fruits instead.
Last week, I heard someone say "I haven't received very many Christmas cards this year." I thought, how sad it is that computer e-mail has replaced the special cards and letters that people used to receive. I am a family genealogist, and I love old things. I have in my possession letters that were written in the late 1800's from my great grandparents, letters written in 1918 to my grandma from my grandpa when he was in WWI, letters written in the 1980's to me from my mom when I moved away from home, and I have saved special Christmas cards signed by my family who have passed on.
This is the time of year that most people are working on their tans, although there are some organized people who are spending this time planning for the holidays. These are the people who make Christmas gifts, or do a lot of holiday entertaining. Now is the time to start those crafts! That way, November and December can be a time to enjoy the season instead of spending your time rushing around. Join us at the Antioch Branch for Christmas in July!
