6 in 12: Reading Is Its Own Reward, But Who Doesn't Want to Win an eReader?
'Tis the season to hone in on the best deals, clip coupons, shop, wrap purchases, decorate like your life depends on it, cook, wait in line for an eon at the post office, and send out Christmas cards to people you haven't actually spoken to in years. Relax. Pour yourself a glass of egg nog or hot apple cider, collapse into your favorite comfy chair, and give yourself a reading break!
Every year around this time, I make new promises to myself - to lose weight, to get organized, to jump out of airplane, skydive, and volunteer. A lot of those good intentions go by the wayside as I find myself at the end of January, eating bon-bons on the couch while watching a workout video. Instead of setting myself up for failure, I should commit to doing something I LOVE—yes, read more romance novels! Now this I can do.
Have you heard about 6 in 12? It’s the exciting new reading challenge offered by MCPL! All of the information can be found on this webpage, but the gist is that anyone 18 and over can be entered into a drawing each time they read a library book this year! The idea is to encourage us all to read the books we always intended to read but never got around to.
I read a lot. I know this isn't a surprise; after all, I am a librarian. I do, however, have a secret shame. There are gaping holes in my reading resume.
We would like to challenge you to read at least 6. We think you can do it. Scratch that. We KNOW you can do it. How do we know? Because you are a member of the MCPL! Our customers are the best. We know this, and you know this, so now you can prove it! We have a brand new reading challenge, and guess what? It is for ADULTS! We are so excited to offer this new challenge. All books must be from the Library. Audiobooks, eBooks, comics, and print titles all count towards your goal. You could win one of 5 eReaders and other assorted prizes.
January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Until recently, I hadn’t given human trafficking much thought. The victims I pictured were European immigrants or middle-class runaways forced into prostitution. Most of my knowledge came from TV shows or movies like Taken. I never thought of human trafficking as a U.S. problem.
As you may or may not know, MCPL is currently holding its 6 in 12 adult reading challenge. The rules seem easy enough; read six books in twelve months for a chance to win an eReader.
For an avid reader like me, six books seem like a piece of cake. Still, I know there are book lovers out there who wish they could read more but can’t find the time. For those readers, I offer a solution…Why not try a teen book?
